Offer In Compromise. The IRS realizes that life happens. Sometimes a tax debt may result that you just can not pay. Although these are happening less with the difficult economic times the IRS is experiencing, they may settle the debt for less and return you to a compliant status. The process is very difficult and your inability to pay must b fully documented.
Currently Not Collectible. This is for those taxpayers on a fixed income and are currently experiencing financial hardship. If this is you, you may qualify for this. In this is the case, you may be placed into a no-collect status and the IRS will no longer try to collect from you. Please note, this is not a permanent status and your status may be reexamined periodically.
Penalty Abatement. This has become even more difficult to obtain; however, the IRS has the authority to abate some or all of the penalties assessed.
Installment Agreement. This is what you will most likely have, to some extent, at the end of the negotiations. You will make a manageable monthly payment and will have to remain in compliance for your current taxes. This is a stress free easy to handle your past due taxes, penalties, and interest that remains after negotiations.
